BEIRUT April 30. 2024 (Saba) - Hundreds of students in Lebanon protested on Tuesday at several universities, notably the American University in Beirut, in solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, which has been subjected to a devastating Zionist aggression since October,7,2023.
This comes within the framework of the student movement that began in the United States more than 10 days ago, then expanded into several Western, Islamic, and recently Arab countries.
The demonstrations came in response to calls from student councils and other student associations, including the "Gathering of Free University Students," under the slogan "Supporting the steadfastness of Gaza."
Students protested at both the American University and the Lebanese American University in Beirut, as well as two branches of the Arab University of Beirut in the capital and Tripoli.
The students raised Palestinian flags and chanted slogans in support of Palestinians, calling for an end to the Zionist aggression on Gaza.
On Monday, the "Gathering of Free University Students" called for participation in solidarity vigils with Gaza at all universities in the country, today, Tuesday.
The gathering said in a statement that this comes "in support of the legendary steadfastness of the people of Gaza in the face of the new Nazism," directing "salutations to the uprising students in American and European universities" in support of Gaza.
Universities in Mauritania and Tunisia have also witnessed similar solidarity protests with the Palestinian people, demanding an end to the Zionist war on Gaza, which has been ongoing for the seventh consecutive month.
On April 18th, students opposed to the Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip began a sit-in at the campus of Columbia University in New York, demanding its administration to stop its academic cooperation with Zionist universities and withdraw its investments from companies that support the occupation of Palestinian territories.
With the intervention of police forces and the arrest of dozens of students, the anger escalated, and the protests spread to dozens of universities in the United States, including leading universities such as Harvard, George Washington, New York, Yale, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and North Carolina.
Later on, the unprecedented student movement expanded to universities in countries such as France, Britain, Germany, Canada, and India, all of which witnessed supportive protests in solidarity with their counterparts in American universities and calls to end the aggression on Gaza and boycott companies that supply weapons to the Zionist entity.
