NAIROBI April 30. 2024 (Saba) - Local authorities in Nakuru County in central Kenya announced on Tuesday that at least 45 people were killed as a result of the collapse of a dam in Kenya due to heavy rains.
Kenyan media quoted Nakuru County Police Chief, Samuel Ndanyi, as saying: “Most of the victims are women, children and the elderly who may not have been able to reach safe areas more quickly.”
Local reports said that entire homes in Kamuchiri village in Mai Mahiu were swept away by the waters of the dam, which collapsed.
They confirmed that more than 100 people were rescued by police and Kenya Red Cross teams.
The dam collapse also cut off the road linking Mai Mahiu to Naipasha town, according to Kenya Highways Authority.
This tragedy comes after weeks of heavy rains that caused widespread floods, leaving more than 100 victims and forcing thousands to flee their homes.
