UNRWA calls for investigation into Zionist enemy attacks against its staff & buildings in Gaza
[24/ April/2024]

GAZA April 24. 2024 (Saba) - UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini called on the Security Council to investigate the blatant disregard for UN operations in Gaza after hundreds of its staff were killed and its buildings destroyed, criticizing the Zionist enemy.

According to the Palestinian Ma'an news agency today, Lazzarini said he called on "members of the Security Council to conduct an independent investigation and accountability for the blatant disregard for UN buildings, UN personnel and UN operations in the Gaza Strip," adding that "the evacuated Agency buildings were used for military purposes, while Agency staff were arrested and tortured."

"Herein lies the importance of an investigation and accountability" to avoid establishing lower standards in any future conflicts, Lazzarini said.

The report noted that the Zionist enemy did not provide evidence to support its accusations that UNRWA employees were linked to terrorist organizations, but also concluded that the agency suffers from "problems related to neutrality," especially in terms of its staff's use of social networks.

Since the outbreak of the war, 180 UNRWA staff have been killed, 160 UNRWA buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and "at least 400 people have been killed while seeking the protection provided by the UN flag," Lazzarini said.

Israel accused the UN agency of "employing more than 400 terrorists in Gaza, including 12 staff members who were directly involved in the October 7 attack," and the Israeli accusations prompted UNRWA to some 15 donors, led by the United States and the United Kingdom, to freeze its funding in January.

A number of these actors resumed funding for UNRWA, including Scandinavia, Japan, Germany, France and Canada.
