Lebanon's elections polls closure, Mikati describes them as an "achievement and great victory"
[16/May/2022]

BEIRUT, May. 16 (Saba) -  The polls were closed in Lebanon's parliamentary elections on Sunday, in 15 districts, amid tight security by elements of the army and internal security forces.

According to Al-Manar, there have been instances of discrepancies in turnout since this morning, while in some pens it has reached more than 50 percent. and began to rise relatively high from 1 p.m., while some pens saw a number of problems soon resolved after the intervention of the security forces or the military.

These legislative elections, which are held every four years, are contested by 103 electoral lists of 718 candidates divided into 15 constituencies, to select 128 deputies in Parliament.

Following the closure of the polls, Lebanese Government President Najib Mikati thanked the Lebanese security forces for their keenness to complete the electoral process. He hoped that the elections would "produce a new House of Representatives to lift Lebanon out of its current crisis".

Mikati added during a press conference: "Polling rates have exceeded 50 percent in a number of Lebanese regions, but so far the turnout is generally not high." He stressed that "there are no elections except for those with flaws, and there is a Constitutional Council for those attending the appeal."

"The Minister of Interior Bassam al-Mawlawi has asked the Chief of Registry to allow all voters inside the polling booths to cast their ballots."

With regard to the counting of votes and the issuance of results, the Minister of the Interior and Municipalities of Bassam al-Mawlawi has previously confirmed that "the counting will be night in the judiciary of judges who will be surrounded by the required security". Adding: "I'll be in all the pens and the result will come out as soon as possible."
