Six-magnitude earthquake hits off Fukushima region in northeastern Japan
[Thu, 04 Apr 2024 18:59:01 +0300]

TOKYO April 04. 2024 (Saba) - The Japan Meteorological Agency announced on Thursday that an earthquake measuring six on the Richter scale struck off the Fukushima region in northeastern Japan, without a tsunami warning.

Japanese media quoted the agency as saying there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries after the quake, which was centered at a depth of 40 kilometers and was felt by Tokyo residents.

TEPCO, which operates the Fukushima plant, said no "malfunction" had been detected either at the nuclear facility or in the region.

Japan experiences hundreds of earthquakes every year, though most do not cause damage due to strict building rules in place for decades.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the quake at 6.1. He pointed out that it occurred at a depth of 40.1 km.

Japan experienced the most severe nine-magnitude earthquake in March 2011 when it struck undersea off the coast of the northeastern country of Japan, triggering a tsunami that killed or misses about 18,500 people. That disaster caused the collapse of three reactors at the Fukushima plant, Japan's worst postwar disaster and the most serious nuclear accident since Chernobyl.

Japan was also hit by a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake on New Year's Day that hit the Noto Modia peninsula with more than 230 people, many of whom died in the collapse of old buildings.
