BEIJING May 10. 2024 (Saba) - China's Defense Ministry announced that it issued a warning to a US Navy ship today near the Paracel Islands in disputed waters in the South China Sea.
Chinese military spokesman Tian Junli said
, in a statement, that his country sent naval and air forces to track and monitor the ship under laws and rules and issued a warning to push it to leave.
The guided-missile destroyer Halsey illegally penetrated into Chinese territorial waters near the Paracel Islands without government approval, Gunli said, noting that U.S. moves seriously violate China's sovereignty and security.
The U.S. Navy said in a statement that the ship asserted its navigational rights and freedoms in the South China Sea near the Paracel Islands, adding that at the conclusion of the operation, Halsey left the area and continued operations in the South China Sea.
The U.S. Navy said Beijing's "illegal" maritime claims in the South China Sea posed a serious threat to freedom of navigation.
