BRASILIA June 12. 2024 (Saba) - Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira has confirmed that his country is considering the possibility of using the national currency in payments for oil and gas imported from Russia.

The Russian news agency TASS quoted Vieira, in a statement on Wednesday, as saying "Payments between Brazil and the Russian Federation have not yet been implemented in the two national currencies, but this possibility is being studied. This mechanism would allow Brazil to pay for Russian imports and Russia to pay for our goods in the national currency of both countries."

“The topic will be discussed with the Minister of Finance (Fernando Haddad), so Brazilian companies will start paying for gas and oil from the Russian Federation through the mechanism of the two national currencies,” he added.

He emphasized that payments in national currencies will be applied not only to oil and gas, but also to any other goods from Russia.
