Geneva - Saba:
Amnesty International's Secretary General, Agnes Callamard, has confirmed that the Israeli occupation authorities have been attempting for over a year to persuade their allies and much of the world that their actions to eliminate the Gaza Strip are legitimate acts of self-defense. This has coincided with Israel launching a brutal and relentless military offensive against Gaza.
Callamard stated in a Newsweek article on Sunday that the assertion that the war of extermination in Gaza is aimed solely at dismantling Hamas, and not at physically destroying Palestinians as a national and ethnic group, is invalid. She highlighted that Amnesty International recently published conclusive evidence indicating that the Israeli forces have committed acts of genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and continue to do so.
The conclusion that Israel has committed genocide is based on thorough research and careful legal analysis. Our findings indicate that Israel has engaged in actions prohibited under the Genocide Convention against Palestinians in Gaza, including killings and causing serious physical and psychological harm, and deliberately imposing living conditions aimed at their physical destruction.
Callamard said the occupation army destroyed Gaza quickly and on a scale not seen in any other conflict in this century, demolishing entire cities and destroying vital infrastructure, agricultural land, and cultural and religious sites. The killing of tens of thousands of Palestinians in one year, and the toll of famine and disease, are a stunning tragedy.
"What makes these acts genocide under international law is intent, and the evidence presented in the organization's report clearly shows that the deliberate aim of the Zionist military campaign is to destroy Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where statements made by high-level Zionist officials have dehumanized Palestinians and called for acts of genocide, revealing Israel's true intentions."
