Seoul – Saba:
South Korea's opposition on Sunday called on the Constitutional Court to quickly decide the fate of ousted President Yoon Suk Yul so the country can recover from "national unrest" caused by martial law.
According to AFP, the head of the Democratic Party (the main opposition force) Lee Jae-myung, said, "The Constitutional Court must quickly consider the impeachment proceedings against the president."
"This is the only way to reduce national unrest and alleviate the suffering of the people," Myung said.
Constitutional Court President Moon Heung-bae vowed on Saturday evening that "the procedure would be swift and fair." The rest of the judges also called for the first meeting to discuss the issue on Monday.
Meanwhile, South Korean Prime Minister Han Dak so, who is temporarily assuming the presidency, held telephone conversations with US President Joe Biden on Saturday evening.
The White House said in a statement that Biden expressed "appreciation for the steadfastness of democracy and the rule of law in South Korea."
According to the statement, President Biden expressed confidence that the U.S.-South Korea alliance will remain the pillar of peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region during Han's tenure as acting president.
