New York-Saba:
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced that the number of children living in conflict zones or forcibly displaced from their homes due to war has become greater than ever before.
The organization's Executive Director, Catherine Russell, said in a statement, "By almost all measures, 2024 was one of the worst years ever for children in conflict zones in the organization's history, both in terms of the number of children affected and the level of impact on their lives."
The organization added in a report issued today, Saturday, that about 473 million children live in conflict zones, or more than one in six children around the world.
The organization indicated that the percentage of children living in conflict areas has doubled from about 10% in the 1990s to about 19% today. The organization stated that these children are killed, injured, forced to drop out of school, do not receive vital vaccinations, or suffer from severe malnutrition.
