New York - Saba:
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) revealed, according to a review of the latest available data and prevailing global trends, that the impact of armed conflicts on children around the world has reached devastating and perhaps record levels in 2024.
Estimates indicate that the number of children living in conflict areas or who have been forcibly displaced due to conflict and violence is greater than ever before, UNICEF said in a statement last night.
A record number of children affected by conflict are subject to violations of their rights, including killing, injury, dropping out of school, loss of life-saving vaccines, and severe malnutrition, it added.
It explained that more than 473 million children - more than one in six children worldwide - now live in areas affected by conflict, as the world witnesses the highest number of conflicts since World War II. The proportion of the world's children living in conflict areas has doubled, from about 10 percent in the 1990s to nearly 19 percent today.
