Algeria will take over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for the current month of January, succeeding the United States of America, starting today, Wednesday.
Algeria's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Amar Ben Jamaa, will hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, New York time, during which he will brief the accredited press on the Council's work program after the Security Council approves the program in a morning session.
The Council consists of 15 countries, each with one vote, including five permanent member states with the right to veto: Russia, China, France, Britain, and the United States of America, and ten non-permanent member states elected for two years by the General Assembly: Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia, in addition to Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, Denmark, and Greece, which began its membership today.
The following countries left the Council as of today after their non-permanent membership for two years: Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland.
The Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, which include the Secretariat, the General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, the Trusteeship Council, and the Economic and Social Council.
