Gaza - Saba:
The Zionist enemy early on Thursday assassinated the Director General of Gaza Strip Police, Major General Mahmoud Salah, and his assistant, Major General Hussam Shahwan, a member of the Police Command Council in Khan Younis, the Palestinian Ministry of Interior and National Security said.
"The Zionist enemy assassinated the Director-General of Police in the Gaza Strip, Major General Mahmoud Salah, in an airstrike early Thursday morning while he was in Khan Younis Governorate, accompanied by Major General Hussam Shahwan, a member of the Police Command Council," the ministry said in a statement.
"They were carrying out their humanitarian and national duty in serving our Palestinian people in light of the catastrophic circumstances they are experiencing as a result of the Zionist aggression, which also led to the death of a number of citizens as a result of the raid."
By committing the crime of assassinating the Director-General of Gaza Police, the enemy is insisting on spreading chaos in the Strip and deepening the human suffering of citizens, and is disregarding all the international and humanitarian laws, it added, as "the police is a civil protection force that plays a humanitarian role in helping citizens and providing services to them in light of the tragic circumstances they are suffering due to the ongoing aggression for 15 months."
It noted that Major General Mahmoud Salah was martyred in the field of serving the Palestinian people, crowning his life with the medal of martyrdom after 30 years of work in the Palestinian Police Service since its establishment, moving in responsibility between its various departments until reaching his responsibility for the police service six years ago.
He is known for his high professionalism, great capabilities and wide relations with all segments of Palestinian society. During these years he used his long experience and great effort in spreading security in the Gaza Strip, until he offered his soul and blood for this lofty goal, bearing responsibility in the most difficult stations and circumstances that the Palestinian people live.
"The blood of Major General Mahmoud Salah and Major General Hussam Shahwan, who spent the years of his professional life within the police service in the service of his people, is not more precious than the blood of our people, women, children, youth and the elderly, and it is mixed today with the blood of hundreds of officers and members of the police service who were targeted by the occupier during its fierce war on Gaza while they were performing the honorable duty in serving our people."
The ministry concluded its statement by saying: "We will not back down from doing our duty towards our people, no matter the sacrifices and challenges, and the occupier will not succeed in achieving its malicious goals to strike the steadfastness of our people. The Interior Ministry's bureaus, led by the police, will continue to confront all attempts to spread chaos in the Gaza Strip."
