Capitals - Saba:
Peru and Chile on Friday extended warnings related to the risks of high waves until next week, which hit their coasts at the end of last year, claimed the lives of three people and caused damage in both countries in addition to Ecuador.
In Peru, the Civil Defense said in a post on the X platform that it had extended until Tuesday the recommendation to "suspend port and fishing activities, in addition to securing ships."
For its part, the Peruvian Navy said that 60 of the 121 ports were closed on Friday due to waves ranging from low to medium height, indicating that this measure will continue until Tuesday.
The Peruvian authorities called on the population during this period to "avoid sports and recreational activities, as well as camping near the beaches" as long as this phenomenon continues.
These exceptional waves are formed in the open ocean, thousands of kilometers away from the coast, making them much more dangerous than normal waves on the beaches due to local winds.
The waves are expected to affect the entire coast of Peru, from the border with Ecuador in the north to the border with Chile in the south.
However, the waves are expected to be less powerful than those that hit the coasts of Ecuador, Peru and Chile on December 28 and 29, killing three people, causing serious damage, especially to fishermen, and forcing the closure of many ports.
In Chile, the Marine Meteorological Service indicated in a warning bulletin that the strongest waves will hit the coasts on Friday, but the danger will not pass before Monday.
According to the Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Ecuadorian Navy (INOCAR), this natural phenomenon, which causes waves "above average", consists of "bottom movements characterized by continuous and long-lasting waves generated by distant storms that move along the Pacific Ocean until they reach the coasts."
