Washington - Saba:
Stephen Cheung, communications director for US President-elect Donald Trump, has criticized a New York court ruling on a document forgery case.
Cheung on Saturday said the decision is a direct violation of the Supreme Court's immunity decision for Trump, according to US media.
"This illegal case should never have been filed and the Constitution requires it to be dropped immediately," adding: "There should be no prison sentence against Trump," he added.
A New York court judge set January 10 as the date for Trump's sentencing in a document forgery case, and ordered the president-elect to appear in court.
The president-elect may not appear in court in person and instead appear online, but Trump's lawyers must notify the court of his appearance no later than January 5, according to the court statement.
It is noteworthy that the New York court refused last December to overturn the jury's conviction against Trump after he won the presidential election.
Trump, the winner of the US presidential election, is expected to be inaugurated on January 20, succeeding current President Joe Biden.
