Beirut - Saba:
The Lebanese Parliament holds a general session today, Thursday, to elect the President of the Lebanese Republic in the presence of the heads of diplomatic missions operating in Lebanon after the invitation extended by the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri.
According to the Lebanese media, the President of the Republic in Lebanon is elected by secret ballot with a two-thirds majority of the House of Representatives in the first round, and an absolute majority is sufficient in the voting rounds that follow.
His presidency lasts for six years and he may not be re-elected except after six years from the end of his term.
Today's election session comes after a vacuum in the position of the President of the Republic that lasted for more than two years after the end of the term of former Lebanese President, General Michel Aoun.
