The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert congratulated General Joseph Aoun on his election on Thursday as President of the Lebanese Republic.
According to Lebanese media, in a statement, it welcomed the "election of the president as a long-awaited first step to overcome the political and institutional void in Lebanon, which provides the Lebanese people with effective government institutions that meet their aspirations."
The special coordinator stressed the necessity of "expediting the assignment of a prime minister and the formation of a government without any delay, as the tasks assigned to the Lebanese state are very huge and cannot tolerate more time."
She added: "It is time for every decision-maker to place Lebanon's interest in the first place, above all personal or political considerations."
She pointed out that the election of a new president is hope again, and represents an opportunity to pave the way for progress in consolidating the endowment of hostilities and ensuring the security and stability of the country, including strengthening the state’s authority over all Lebanese territory and pushing the wheel of comprehensive and sustainable reforms.
She emphasized that "the United Nations aspires to work with President Aoun and the relevant authorities to support Lebanon, in the concrete and feasible steps it takes to achieve these goals."
