New York - Saba:
The United Nations warned, as part of its launch of an appeal to collect $1.43 billion, that about six million people in Somalia need humanitarian aid this year.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement: "Somalia continues to face a complex and protracted humanitarian crisis," referring to a set of issues that further complicate this crisis, including "climate shocks."
The statement stated that Somalia is currently facing "widespread drought conditions after poor rainfall from October to December."
The statement indicated that the funding appeal launched last Monday with the Somali government aims to "support about 4.6 million of the most vulnerable people in the country."
