Brussels - Saba:
The European Commission confirmed on Thursday that the European Union will protect workers, companies and consumers from unjustified US tariffs.
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview with the Times of India newspaper ahead of her visit to New Delhi: "There is no winner in trade wars, and workers, companies and the middle class on both sides are the most affected."
Von der Leyen added: "Of course, Europe remains open to dialogue and mutually beneficial agreements, but unjustified tariffs will not remain unanswered. We will protect our workers, companies and consumers at every step."
US President Donald Trump stated Wednesday that Washington will raise customs duties on imports from Canada and Mexico to 45% next April.
He also indicated that he will impose customs duties of 25% on products imported from the European Union, including cars.
