Washington - Saba:
NASA revealed that sea level rose during 2024 at a rate of 0.23 inches per year, exceeding the previous forecast of 0.17 inches. This rise is due to warming oceans and melting ice sheets and glaciers.
Researcher Josh Willis stressed that the rate of sea level rise is becoming faster, posing a growing threat to infrastructure, coastlines and ecosystems, as high tide flooding increases.
More than 90 percent of global warming is absorbed by the oceans, leading to water expansion and sea level rise through "thermal expansion," which has contributed to about a third of the rise since 2004.
