Ottawa - Saba:
New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for early parliamentary elections on April 28, vowing to thwart US President Donald Trump's efforts to annex the United States, its northern neighbor.
Carney, a former governor of the Bank of Canada, was chosen by the centrist Liberal Party to succeed Justin Trudeau as prime minister, but he has never previously contested a national election.
"I have just asked the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28. She has agreed," Carney said in an address to the nation last night, referring to the representative of King Charles III in Canada, a member of the British Commonwealth.
