The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, stated on Tuesday that “hunger has become the newest killer in Gaza”, stressing that “the time has come to deliver humanitarian aid safely and with dignity.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), Lazzarini pointed to the failure of the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which has tried for five months to replace the coordinated UN response with four Israeli military distribution points.
He explained that before famine spread, community distribution centers—supported by humanitarian partners—were providing food and assistance to about 2 million people across the Gaza Strip.
He added: “Let the UN and our partners do their job.”
Palestinians in Gaza are currently facing an unprecedented wave of hunger following the Israeli regime’s closure of border crossings in early March and the imposition of severe restrictions on the entry of food, aid, fuel, and medicine.
As time passes, residents have exhausted all food resources, markets have emptied, and even finding a loaf of bread has become nearly impossible. Whatever goods are still available have seen unimaginable price hikes, making death by starvation one of the most brutal causes of death in the besieged enclave.
Israeli crimes against Palestinians waiting for aid continue daily, especially since the implementation of the so-called “Israeli-American mechanism” supervised by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation began on May 27.
