STOCKHOLM Aug 01. 2023 (SABA) - An atheist Swedish man re-burned pages of the Holy Koran before the Parliament in Stockholm, in a protest move similar to those that caused tension between Sweden and a number of Muslim countries.
According to media reports on Monday, Salwan Momika stepped on the Quran and then burned it down, as he did at a demonstration in front of Stockholm's main mosque in late June.
The Swedish police had granted permission to hold the protest.
On Monday, Swedish police granted new permission to burn copies of the Holy Quran off Parliament in Stockholm.
According to French news agency AFP, "the police granted permission to hold a protest in front of Parliament on Monday whose organizers intend to" burn "copies of the Sharif Quran.
This will be the latest permission in a series of moves to desecrate the Quran that have provoked angry reactions in the Muslim world.
The new Iraqi movement is organized by Salwan Najem, who joined his compatriot Salwan Momika in two recent movements over the past period, during which he desecrated the Koran and burned it in front of a mosque and the Iraqi embassy.
The Swedish police did not immediately respond to AFP's request for a copy of the request to organize Monday's move and the permission granted to him.
The police had previously confirmed that they exclusively agreed to hold a gathering without being linked to the activities that would permeate it.
The Expressen quoted Najem as saying that he would burn the Koran "repeatedly until you ban it" in the country.
Diplomatic relations between Sweden and a number of Middle Eastern countries and the Islamic world have been strained in the past weeks after the police authorized movements involving the desecration of the Quran.
In late June, Momika, 37, set fire to some pages of the Quran outside Stockholm's largest mosque. About a month later, he organized a similar move outside the Iraqi Embassy's headquarters, during which he trampled the Quran without burning it.
