TRIPOLI Sep. 11. 2023 (Saba) - The Libyan authorities announced on Monday that the city of Derna is a disaster-stricken city after increasing the number of floods' victims to 150 people, resulting from Hurricane Daniel.
Libyan media reported that the Supreme Emergency Committee subsequently declared a state of alert in order to provide relief to those affected by torrents and floods in the country.
The Libyan authorities confirmed that the heavy rains caused significant and severe damage to infrastructure and property while the search for a number of missing persons continues.
Meanwhile, torrential rains swept across several cities in the east and west of the country, and the flow of valleys flooded homes and hospitals, damaged cars, and destroyed roads.
In turn, the Libyan Red Crescent confirmed the death of one of its members, the loss of others, and the loss of two cars while trying to evacuate stranded families... announcing that the situation in some cities in eastern Libya had reached the red line due to the floods.
The death toll is expected to rise in the coming hours, as searches for missing persons continue and access to some affected areas becomes difficult.
