MOSCOW February 21. 2024 (Saba) - Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko took a picture of the moon on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the start of tests of the N1 superheavy transport rocket.

The Russian news agency "TASS" on Wednesday quoted Kononenko as saying: "55 years ago on February 21, 1969, tests of the ultraheavy transport rocket (N1), which was designed within the framework of the manned lunar program in 1061-1972, began."

He considered this rocket a myth of national space programs and was the "spoiled child" of Sergey Koroleov, to whom he linked his most ambitious space projects, and this rocket was supposed to transport Soviet cosmonauts to Mars - these were the initial plans.

Kononenko pointed out that work on the design of this rocket officially began on June 23, 1960 based on the decision of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Council of Ministers of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics "on the creation of powerful transport rockets, satellites and spacecraft, and work in this direction continued until May 1974 when the freeze of the Soviet lunar program was announced.
