Global Health: Life-saving aid in Gaza insufficient, losses are unimaginable
[22/ February/2024]

GAZA February 22. 2024 (Saba) - The World Health Organization's Regional Director for the Middle East, Hanan Balkhi, stressed on Thursday that life-saving assistance in Gaza is woefully inadequate, and that all people in Gaza face unimaginable violence and losses, with nowhere to flee.

Balkhi said in a statement today: "Cutting funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) will have further catastrophic consequences for the residents of the Strip."

"No agency, including WHO, can fill the critical gaps that may arise if UNRWA is unable to operate at full capacity," she said.

"Funding cuts also have serious consequences, as UNRWA services include the Palestinian populations in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria," she said.

"At the same time, life-saving aid remains woefully inadequate."

Balkhi said that the World Food Programme's recent announcement of a halt to food deliveries to northern Gaza means that "the situation there will deteriorate further, leaving hundreds of thousands of people in a precarious situation, with children and pregnant women most at risk of acute malnutrition, disease and long-term health consequences leading to death."
