OUAGADOUGOU April 18. 2024 (Saba) - Burkina Faso has given three French diplomats, including two advisers at the French embassy in Ouagadougou, 48 hours to leave the country, accusing them of involvement in "subversive activities".

Burkina Faso's foreign ministry sent a warrant to expel three French diplomats, including two political advisers at the French embassy in Ouagadougou, after declaring them "persona non grata" for "subversive activities" and asking them to leave the country, according to AFP.

In a note to the French embassy in Ouagadougou dated Tuesday and obtained by Agence France-Presse on Thursday, the ministry wrote that the three diplomats "classified persona non grata on the territory of Burkina Faso for carrying out subversive activities". "They are being asked to leave" Burkina Faso "within the next 48 hours."

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that it regretted Burkina Faso's decision to expel French diplomats and staff.

On December 1, four French government employees who authorities said were intelligence agents and a French diplomatic source in Ouagadougou said were computer maintenance technicians, were arrested, charged and then imprisoned, according to the French source. They are now under house arrest, according to Burkina Faso security sources.

In December 2022, the Burkina Faso government deported two French workers for a local company after authorities suspected them of being spies.
