WASHINGTON April 20. 2024 (Saba) -The United States of America reached an agreement on Friday with the Nigerien authorities to withdraw its forces, numbering more than a thousand soldiers, from the African country.
Agence France-Presse quoted American officials as saying that US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell agreed to the Niamey authorities’ request to withdraw forces, during a meeting in Washington with Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zein.
The agreement stipulates sending an American delegation to Niger in the coming days to agree on the details of the withdrawal.
The United States suspended most of its cooperation, including military cooperation, with Niger after former President Mohamed Bazoum was ousted on July 26.
Last March, Niger withdrew from a military cooperation agreement signed in 2012 with the United States, considering that Washington had “unilaterally imposed it.”
