Awareness event on World Thalassemia Day in Amanat Al Asimah

SANA'A May 08. 2024 (Saba) - The Yemeni Society for Thalassemia and Genetic Blood Patients in Sana'a organized today,Wednesday, an awareness event and an open day for its members and their families, as part of psychological support activities, on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day, under the slogan "Be Aware... Share and Care."

At the event, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health and Population, Dr. Anis Al-Asbahi, praised the association’s role in raising awareness , contributing to providing treatment and psychological care for thalassemia patients in partnership with the Ministry of Health.

He stressed the importance of early screening to prevent these diseases, especially for those about to get married, calling on the Ministry of Justice to work on approving the conduct of tests before marriage to authenticate the marriage contract.

Al-Asbahi called on companies and businessmen to help this category of patients, to alleviate their suffering. He urged the concerned authorities to work towards establishing the National Center for Patients with Thalassemia and Hereditary Blood Diseases, and to establish an open day for blood donation for people with thalassemia.

For his part, the president of the association, Dr. Ahmed Al-Makarmi, warned of the increasing registration of new cases of thalassemia in Yemen.

Dr. Al-Maqrami stressed that medicines are insufficient and the needs are many, most notably blood. He called on government and private agencies to cooperate in enhancing community awareness to confront the disease that some countries have been able to eradicate, as well as to help patients with everything they can.

In turn, the General Director of the Association, Jamil Al-Khayati, stressed the need for everyone’s cooperation to establish a culture of blood donation that contributes to saving thalassemia patients.

Sick children, and other children of the guests, had an open day of entertainment in the Magical City Park, in which they enjoyed electrical, pneumatic and creative games.
