Sweet potato harvest season in Jabal Al-Sharq district in Dhamar inaugurated

DHAMAR May 19. 2024 (Saba) Farmers of Wadi Zaha area in the district of Al-Humaita, Jabal Al-Sharq District in Dhamar Governorate, inaugurated on Sunday the harvest season of the "sweet potato" crop.

During the inauguration, Naji al-Jawfi, director of the directorate's agriculture and irrigation office, explained that the area planted with sweet potatoes in the area is about four hectares, and production is expected to reach four tons.

He pointed to the importance of the crop and its nutritional value, the ease of cultivation without the need for inputs of fertilizers or pesticides and its ability to overcome climatic fluctuations. He pointed out that the crop is in increasing demand and achieves an appropriate return for farmers.

Al-Joufi praised the role of the region's farmers in continuing to cultivate this food crop and preserve the agricultural heritage, in addition to other agricultural crops such as coffee, grains, legumes and fruits, as they are among the basic and strategic crops that are reliable to contribute to achieving food security and self-sufficiency.

Farmer Mohammed Al-Mansoub said that the cultivation of "sweet potatoes" comes within the framework of preserving the agricultural heritage that the region is famous for and exploiting the availability of permanent flowing water in the region, which is one of the fertile areas and is eligible to expand the cultivation of a number of cash crops throughout the year.

He praised the role of the Agriculture Office and its cadres in providing agricultural extension services and encouraging farmers to expand the cultivation of various crops.
