Sana'a Water Basin Committee discusses requests to drill new & postponed water wells

SANA'A May 21. 2024 (Saba) - Sana'a Water Basin Mini Committee in its meeting today, Tuesday, headed by the Deputy Minister of Water and Environment - Chairman of the Committee, Hanin Al-Duraib, discussed the requests submitted to the committee, including drilling new and postponed wells within the basin.

In its meeting, which included members of the Undersecretary of the Capital Municipality, Abdel Fattah Al-Sharafi, the Sana’a , Yahya Jumaan, Fares Al-Kahali, the Water Resources Authority, Eng. Abdel-Karim Al-Sufyani, and the Assistant Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Abdel-Karim Mayad, the committee reviewed 27 requests to dig new, maintain, and deepen wells.

Discussion of the rest of the requests submitted to the committee was postponed to a meeting next Monday and sunday.

At the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Water and Environment stressed the keenness to hold the committee’s meetings regularly to discuss the requests submitted to it in order to preserve the waters of Sana’a Basin and not harm the basin.

He stressed the importance of continuing to prevent random and unfair drilling in the basin areas, and coordinating with the relevant authorities to prevent random and illegal drilling of new wells in the basin areas, noting the need to strengthen control over any violations of random well drilling.

The Director of the Water Resources Authority branch in Sana'a, Engineer Mustafa Muhammad Al-Shahari, reviewed the technical details of the applications submitted to the Authority branch to grant licenses to drill new wells, as well as requests for reconsideration and postponed ones.

He touched on the specific locations of the requests submitted, their details, justifications for submitting the requests, the extent of their legality, and technical notes thereon.
