6.3 magnitude earthquake hits off Pacific Ocean Port

VILA May 26. 2024 (Saba) - The US Geological Survey announced on Sunday that an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck off the Pacific Ocean, 83 kilometers northwest of Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu.

The authority said in a statement that the quake occurred near a group of sparsely populated islands and that it was not expected to cause tsunamis.

The epicenter was at a depth of 29.2 kilometers and was located at the intersection of 17.109 degrees south latitude and 167.884 degrees east longitude.

There were no immediate reports of damage in Vanuatu. Earthquakes are common in Vanuatu, an archipelago of 320,000 people on the "Ring of Fire," an area of intense seismic and volcanic activity stretching from Japan to the Pacific basin through Southeast Asia.
