Iran's parliament re-elects Ghalibaf as speaker for one year

TEHRAN May 28. 2024 (Saba) - Iranian parliamentarians have re-elected Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf as speaker for a one-year term by deputies voting for the 12th session of parliament.

According to Iranian news agencies, the opening ceremony of the 12th session of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament) was held on Monday in the presence of a gathering of the country's officials, military leaders and ambassadors of foreign countries.

Qalibaf was appointed speaker of parliament with 198 votes, Mojtaba Zulnouri 60 votes and Manojhar Mottaki five votes out of 290 votes.

Hamid Reza Haji Babaei with 175 votes and Ali Nikzad with 169 votes were elected first and second deputy speakers respectively, and Abdolreza Masri, Haji Delikani, Hamid Rasayi and Musa Ghazanfarabadi were nominated for these posts, but did not receive a majority of votes.

Qalibaf was born in the city of Tarqabeh, Mashhad, 1961 and holds a doctorate in political geography from the University of Tarbet Modaris in the capital, Tehran.

He is one of the prominent figures in the Iranian political arena, and has held several positions, including leadership at the headquarters of the (Khatam al-Anbiya) for reconstruction, the position of mayor of Tehran, and was elected mayor of Tehran by the municipal council of the capital, and he is also a professor at the University of Tehran.

He ran in Iran's 2013 presidential election but lost to President Hassan Rouhani, in second place with 6,077,292 votes, and was a candidate in the 2005 presidential election.

He announced his choice to run for the third time in Iran's 2017 presidential election.

It is worth mentioning that the speaker of the Iranian parliament and the presidential body hold office for one year, provided that the president and members of the presidency have the right to run each year and remain in office for several years after the members are elected to them.
