Philippines raises alert level after fears of eruption of volcano in central country
[03/ June/2024]

MANILA June 03. 2024 (Saba) - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (VIVOLX) today raised the alert level of a volcano eruption in the center of the country after sending dust clouds up to five kilometers into the sky in a move that indicates the possibility of a resurgence.

Reuters quoted the institute as saying in a guidance note that "the warning level is now at the second degree on a five-degree scale for Mount Canlaon, an active volcano that extends across the Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental regions," adding that "the volcano may erupt more magma this time."

The institute said: "Reports were received from residential communities on the western slopes of the volcano about dust and sulfurous smell," pointing to "the occurrence of two weak tremors associated with the volcano."

The institute recommended that pilots be instructed to avoid flying near the top of the volcano and residents to wear masks to protect against volcanic dust in the air.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire region where volcanic activity and earthquakes abound.

Canlaon volcano last erupted in December 2017.
