US Supreme Court postpones Trump's prosecution on charges of conspiracy in previous elections
[01/ July/2024]
WASHINGTON July 01. 2024 (Saba) - The US Supreme Court has extended the postponement of the criminal case against former President Donald Trump, on charges of conspiring to overturn his loss in the last presidential election in 2020, which almost ends the possibility of the former president being tried before the November elections.

According to what was reported by the American media, today, Monday, the US Supreme Court returned the Trump immunity case to a lower court in Washington.. confirming that "the president in the United States does not enjoy any immunity for his unofficial actions," but he has "the right to at least hypothetical immunity for his official actions."

The decision, which was taken on the basis of ideological division among the judges by a majority of 6-3, comes four months before the elections in which Trump is running for the Republican Party to face Democrat Joe Biden.

Trump welcomed the decision, describing it as a "great victory" for democracy. "This is a huge victory for our democracy and our Constitution, and I am proud to be an American!" he wrote on his social network, Truth Social.

In contrast, US President Joe Biden's campaign team denounced the court's decision, saying: "Trump lost his mind after losing the 2020 election and encouraged a gang to overturn the results, and he believes he is above the law and is willing to do anything to get to power and stay in it."

For his part, David Baker, an expert in election law and executive director of the non-profit Center for Election Innovation and Research, described the immunity granted to Trump as "incredibly broad and very disturbing."

He said, in a call with reporters after the ruling was issued: "Anything the president does with the executive branch is described as official business," expressing his belief that this decision "can serve as a road map for those seeking to remain in power."

Baker expressed regret for the time it took the Supreme Court to issue its ruling, saying: “Americans have an interest in knowing the outcome sooner, given Trump’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential election.”
