For first time in world, Omani medical team succeeds in treating patient with Down syndrome
[03/ July/2024]
MUSCAT July 3. 2024 (Saba) - An Omani medical team has achieved a unique Omani and international medical achievement, which is the treatment of a patient suffering from Down syndrome with bone marrow failure using the drug "Romiplostim".

According to the Oman News Agency today, this is an Omani medical team from the Department of Pediatric Hematology at the Royal Hospital of Oman that succeeded in treating the case, which is the first of its kind in the world in which this treatment is used.

Dr. Alia Mohammed Al Mughairy, Consultant of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Head of the Medical Team and Supervisor of the Patient's Case, said that "this case is the first in the world for Down syndrome with bone marrow failure, as it achieved a rapid and noticeable response not only in the number of platelets, but even in the number of red and white blood cells without recording any side effects."

She noted that the drug "Romiplostim" is a synthetic protein that stimulates the production of platelets in patients suffering from thrombocytopenia, and is used specifically to treat some cases of bleeding in children with immune thrombocytopenia to increase the number of platelets.

She pointed out that this drug was recently used in some cases of thrombocytopenia resulting from radiation therapy or chemotherapy in solid tumor diseases in children.

She explained that bone marrow failure is a rare and serious condition that affects the bone marrow, leading to a decrease in the number of white and red blood cells and platelets and making the patient vulnerable to bleeding and bacterial or fungal infections that may be dangerous and require repeated transfusions of blood, platelets, antibiotics or fungi. The patient also suffers from Down syndrome, which further complicated the case.
