UNRWA warns of health crisis in Gaza as waste surrounds displaced tents
[03/ July/2024]
GAZA July 03. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported on Wednesday that displaced people in the central Gaza Strip are surrounded by tons of waste, exacerbated by sewage leaks leading to the spread of intestinal and skin diseases.

The agency noted in its report that as safe spaces for displaced persons to set up tents and live in the central Gaza Strip decrease, they find themselves besieged by waste and sewage, contributing to the health crisis.

UNRWA spokesperson Louise Waterridge stated, "Our agency personnel have been hindered from accessing waste disposal sites by authorities, and many of our sewage facilities and waste disposal vehicles have been destroyed."

The report highlighted that rising temperatures exacerbate these issues, causing not only foul odors but also facilitating the spread of diseases and attracting pests such as mice, rats, and mosquitoes, further compounding health risks.

Furthermore, the situation is worsened by shortages of essential medications used to treat widespread skin and intestinal diseases.

Displaced individuals have also expressed grievances about the lack of resources and tools for personal hygiene and cleaning, exacerbated by a scarcity of water, intensifying the crisis.
