Tunisia: Presidential candidate arrested on suspicion of financial corruption
[04/ July/2024]

TUNISIA July 04. 2024 (Saba) - Tunisian police have arrested the secretary-general of the Republican Popular Union (CHP), Lotfi Mraihi, a candidate for the presidential elections scheduled for October, on suspicion of financial corruption.

According to local media on Thursday, police arrested Mraihi, leader of the Republican People's Union party, also known for his criticism of President Kais Saied's policy, late Wednesday night.

A spokesman for the Capital Tunisia Court said earlier this week that Mraihi was on suspicion of money laundering and opening bank accounts abroad without a license from the central bank.

Saied was elected president of Tunisia in 2019, and has not yet officially announced his candidacy for the elections expected on the sixth of next October.

Last Tuesday, the Tunisian president issued an order calling Tunisian voters for the presidential elections, scheduled for October 6, 2024.
