New misstep for Biden: Proud to be first black woman to work for black president
[05/ July/2024]

Biden made this latest verbal slip during a speech broadcast on the local American radio station "WURD" in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The interview was recorded last Wednesday and aired on July 4th, coinciding with Independence Day.

The interview marked Biden's first public appearance since the debate, amidst speculation about his future in the electoral race and calls for him to withdraw. Andrea Lovell Sanders, an African-American broadcaster, initiated the interview by questioning Biden about concerns stemming from the debate.

In response, Biden laughed off concerns about his performance, acknowledging a rough debate but asserting that it didn't overshadow his accomplishments over his term. However, towards the end of the interview, he made the erroneous statement about being the first vice president who is a black woman to work with a black president, adding to a series of verbal gaffes during his presidency.

Earlier in the interview, Biden also incorrectly stated that he was the first president elected at the state level in Delaware, seemingly confusing this with being the first Catholic elected at that level. Despite these errors, he spoke admirably of John F. Kennedy, the 36th US President and also a Catholic.

On the Fourth of July, Biden made another slip during a speech to military families at the White House, referring to Trump as "one of our fellow former presidents." He abruptly ended his speech after a brief hesitation.

Biden's verbal missteps have contributed to ongoing questions about his mental acuity and ability to fulfill the duties of the presidency, particularly given his age of 81, making him the oldest president in US history. Discussions around age became a focal point in the debate, with Trump challenging Biden to a cognitive test and diverging into a discussion about their respective golf skills.
