Medical sources warn of repercussions of continued fuel crisis on health facilities in Gaza
[06/ July/2024]

GAZA July 06. 2024 (Saba) - Palestinian medical sources warned on Saturday of the repercussions of the continued fuel crisis on the few health facilities operating in the Gaza Strip, in light of austerity measures forced to be implemented due to the scarcity of quantities imported into the Strip.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa: "We warn once again of the continued crisis of fuel needed to operate hospital generators, oxygen stations and refrigerators to store medicines in all health facilities remaining operational in the Gaza Strip."

"Harsh austerity measures are being followed in the face of the policy of Qatarization in the supply of very small quantities of fuel." It added.

"Many departments within the remaining hospitals operating in the Gaza Strip have been suspended as a result of the crisis," it said.

Only 15 of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip are functioning, all partially operational, and face severe shortages of staff and medical supplies, including anesthesia and antibiotics, leaving healthcare workers struggling to save lives.

Some 500 health workers were killed, hundreds were injured, and the Israeli occupying forces arrested more than 310 others and destroyed 130 ambulances during their nine-month aggression on the Gaza Strip.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the volume of medical supplies entering Gaza is insufficient to sustain the health response and that all medical evacuations outside Gaza remain suspended.

Despite the assurances of international human rights organizations that targeting hospitals and the health system is a clear violation of the principles and standards of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention, which guarantees special protection for hospitals and health centers during the outbreak of armed conflicts and wars, and that targeting them constitutes a crime against humanity and amounts to a war crime, the occupation continues to target hospitals and health infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, flouting all international and humanitarian laws.
