WASHINGTON July 16. 2024 (Saba) - US President Joe Biden admitted on Monday that he made a "mistake" by launching, days before his predecessor Donald Trump was shot dead, a call to "target" his Republican rival in the upcoming presidential election.
"It was a mistake that I used that word," Biden said in an interview with the American television news network NBC.
"I wanted to say: focus on him, on what he is doing, on his actions, on the number of lies he told during the debate,"he added.
Biden in the interview called for a calming of the political atmosphere in the country and tried to explain his exact position on his rival.
"How do you talk about the threat to our democracy, which is real when a president says things the way he says them?" Are you supposed to refrain from saying anything just because it might incite someone".
"I did not use this letter . My opponent used this rhetoric, he is talking about a massacre if he loses".
It is noteworthy that Biden had said on the eighth of July in front of a donor conference for his election campaign, "it's time to target Trump,"and since Trump was subjected to an assassination attempt during an election rally on Saturday.
Biden is facing severe criticism because of the term he used when launching that call, and many Republicans accuse the Democratic president of responsibility for the failed assassination attempt suffered by his rival.
