Guterres warns of nuclear threats, stresses importance of dialogue, diplomacy
[22/ August/2024]
NEW YORK August 22. 2024 (Saba) - UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has raised alarm over the escalating risk of nuclear weapon use, calling for increased dialogue and diplomacy to address this growing threat.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric echoed Guterres's concerns, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts to manage the nuclear threat.

This statement comes in response to recent reports about a secret US strategic plan aimed at deterring China in the nuclear arena.

The New York Times reported that US President Joe Biden approved this strategic plan in March, marking a significant shift in US nuclear policy.

The plan, designed to address China's expanding nuclear capabilities, is the first of its kind and highlights concerns that China's nuclear arsenal may soon rival those of the US and Russia.

The document focuses on China's increasing nuclear capabilities and reflects a broader shift in American strategic planning. Last June, Pranay Vaddi, Director of Arms Control and Nonproliferation at the National Security Council, hinted at the new strategy's focus on deterring Russia, China, and North Korea simultaneously.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning criticized the US strategy, accusing Washington of using the "Chinese nuclear threat" as an excuse to evade its own nuclear disarmament commitments.

Mao highlighted that the US is viewed as the largest source of nuclear danger globally.

As the nuclear landscape evolves, the UN continues to advocate for diplomatic solutions to prevent further escalation and ensure global security.
