Russian Foreign Ministry: Moscow embassy in Paris actively working to resolve Telegram founder’s situation
[25/ August/2024]
MOSCOW August 25. 2024 (Saba) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Pavel Durov, the businessman and founder of the Telegram app, had not been in contact with the Russian embassy in France regarding his detention.

The embassy has, however, taken all necessary actions to address the situation surrounding him.

The ministry stated, "In response to reports about Pavel Durov's arrest, the Russian embassy in France promptly initiated the required procedures to clarify the status of the Russian citizen, even though no formal requests had been made by Durov's representatives."

This action was taken prior to a request by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Vladislav Davankov for Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to intervene for Durov's release.

French media reported that Durov was detained on Saturday evening at an airport in the Paris suburbs. French authorities arrested him as part of an investigation into crimes against minors, and the arrest was made at the request of the French agency responsible for such cases.

The French judiciary allegedly accuses Durov of various offenses, including terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, and money laundering, potentially carrying a prison sentence of up to 20 years in France.

The charges reportedly stem from Telegram's alleged refusal to cooperate with French authorities in their investigations.
