HODEIDA September 07. 2024 (Saba) - The number of victims of floods and heavy rains in Hodieda Governorate has risen to 84 deaths and 25 injuries.
The governorate's emergency committee explained in a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) a copy of it, that the victims died as a result of torrential floods and lightning, and many homes were destroyed, since the third of this Safar in 16 districts.
The statement indicated that 21 people died in Zabid District, nine in Al Zaydiyah, nine in Al Zahra, seven in Al Duraihimi, and the same in Bayt Al Faqih, in addition to six in Al Sukhnah, five in Al Marawa'ah, and the same in each of Bajil and Ad Dhahi.
The floods also claimed the lives of two people in Al Luhayyah, two others in Al Jarrahi, and four in Al Hali, Jabal Ras, Al Munira, and Al Qanawis districts, in addition to two cases in Bara.
Last Wednesday, the governorate witnessed heavy rains, which led to the flow of large torrents from several mountainous areas, besieging a number of villages and homes on the outskirts of Hodieda city and the coastal countryside of the governorate for the first time in decades.
The torrents that reached the northern entrance to Hodeidah city flooded hundreds of homes and properties, causing severe damage to infrastructure, housing and agricultural properties, and cutting off a number of roads.
In response, the leadership of the local authority in Hodeidah directed all offices and concerned parties to raise readiness to address the damage caused by the torrents and remain on alert to secure the torrent channels and paths, rescue citizens, preserve lives and property, and reduce losses.
It also directed the governorate's agents for the affairs of the city's squares, the southern, northern and eastern directorates, and the directors of the directorates, to go down to the field to assess the conditions of the affected families, and work with the relevant sectors to facilitate relief and treatment efforts.
Emergency teams and units of security and rescue personnel participated in the rescue operations of a number of affected families and the extraction of stranded women and children.
The emergency committees have strengthened their tasks in the field, and evacuated families whose homes were damaged to alternative locations in a number of schools and provided them with the necessary aid and relief materials.
In turn, the field teams began the tasks of opening roads, removing flood debris, pumping water from neighborhoods and a number of alleys in the city of Hodeida, and implementing treatments on the main lines, including the Hodeida-Haradh line and lifting cars that fell into the flood channel.
The First Undersecretary of Hodeidah Governorate, Ahmed Al-Bishri, confirmed that the emergency teams to confront the flood damage are continuing their efforts to open roads and help the affected families.
He directed the concerned authorities to work in accordance with the directives of the Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Administration and Local and Rural Development regarding checking the water level in dams and water barriers and working to empty them if necessary to avoid new damage and losses.
This comes as the assigned committees continue their work in identifying and assessing the damage and losses incurred by roads, bridges and agricultural properties, as a result of the floods that caused the sweeping away of large areas of fields and crops, and led to the death of thousands of livestock.
