2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Peru achieves its first victory over Uruguay with single goal
[12/ October/2024]
Lima - Saba: Peru achieved its first victory in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup by winning 1-0 against its guest Uruguay today, Saturday.

Defender Araujo's goal came with a header from close range two minutes before the end of the match, giving his country three important points in the qualifiers.

Uruguay was unable to score despite its dominance in the first half in light of the strong defense of the home team and the absence of offensive creativity for the visiting team.

Uruguay's suffering continued in the second half despite coach Marcelo Bielsa's attempts to make substitutions to improve his attacking line, but to no avail, and Peru came out of its area in the final minutes to snatch the precious winning goal.

Uruguay's suffering continued in the qualifiers as it did not achieve a victory in the last three matches, and its balance stopped with this loss at 15 points in third place.

With this victory, Peru raised its score to six points in ninth place, six points behind Bolivia, which is in sixth place.

The first six teams in the group, which includes ten teams, qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup.
