AI: banning UNRWA attack on rights of Palestinian refugees
[30/ October/2024]
Geneva - Saba:

Amnesty International has condemned the decision of the Zionist enemy authorities to ban the work of UNRWA, stressing that it is "unreasonable, constitutes a clear attack on the rights of Palestinian refugees, and amounts to criminalizing humanitarian aid."

Agnes Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, said in a statement that the Zionist decision will exacerbate the already catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Callamard continued "It is clear that the aim of the decision to ban UNRWA is to make the agency's work in the occupied Palestinian territories impossible; by imposing the closure of its headquarters in East Jerusalem, and ending the entry visas of its employees."

She considered the Zionist law "horrific and inhumane," calling on the international community to quickly condemn this law in the strongest possible terms, and to pressure the Zionist government to cancel and retract it.

The AI official pointed out that UNRWA played an indispensable role in providing food, water, medical aid, education and shelter to about two million Palestinians in Gaza, who were forcibly displaced and exposed to a "managed" famine; as a result of the Zionist genocide that has been ongoing for more than a year.

Regarding the legitimacy of the Knesset's law banning UNRWA, Callamard explained that the law contradicts the International Court of Justice's order to ensure the arrival of sufficient humanitarian aid and facilitate the provision of basic living services.

A UNICEF official had stated that the Knesset's decision to ban the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) would lead to a worsening of the situation in the Gaza Strip.
