On Monday, the UN Security Council will hold a briefing under the agenda item “The situation in the Middle East” entitled “Ending war and securing lasting peace” under the chairmanship of UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
The council will be briefed by the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Settlement Process, Tor Wijnnesland.
The UK, which chairs the council this month, has prepared a concept note for Monday's session, which states that ending the war in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon and focusing on securing a broader regional truce through a cessation of conflict.
According to the concept note, the session provides an opportunity to reflect on how the council can “inject renewed momentum into efforts to end conflicts in the region, and to discuss how the end of the conflict could represent a turning point that would put the region on the path towards a stable and secure future.”
