Georgian police block streets leading to Parliament in Tbilisi
[25/ November/2024]
Tbilisi - Saba:
Georgian security forces have closed the streets leading to the parliament building in the capital Tbilisi in anticipation of violence that may be organized by the opposition today, to prevent the election of the parliamentary speaker and deputies.

The Russian TASS news agency said that security personnel are present on both sides of the parliament building and in the square behind it, noting that media representatives are not allowed to enter the building so far.

On Monday at 12:00 local time, the parliament is expected to hold its first session after the elections, which the opposition refused to recognize, to elect the parliamentary speaker, deputies and heads of the legislative body's committees.

The opposition and its supporters have been demonstrating since Sunday, with clashes between police and protesters last night.
The protesters spent the night in tents on Rustaveli Street in the city center.
