Geneva - Saba:
UN rapporteurs late on Tuesday called for full obedience to the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister of war, Yoav Gallant.
The ICC issued the arrest memos following war crimes and crimes against humanity, the UN rapporteurs said in a joint release, noting that the warrants would help save lives, and should be respected and fully abided by.
The ICC decision is for the sake of justice and accountability, and represents a historical step and hope to end decades of impunity for long-term violations of international law in Palestine, they added.
Israel's long lack of accountability has been a factor for escalation of violence in the region, they said, after independent experts obtained documented evidences on international law gross violations committed against civilians in terms of Israel's attacks on Gaza and other Palestinian lands since 7 October 2023.
