Minister of Culture & Tourism meets Urban Heritage Committee of city of Shahara

Sana'a, - Saba:

The Minister of Culture and Tourism, Dr. Ali Qassim Al-Yafei, met today with members of the Urban and Cultural Heritage Committee of the Historical City of Shahara, in the presence of the Chairman of the General Authority for the Preservation of Historic Cities, Abdul Wahab Al-Mahdi.

The meeting reviewed the results and outputs of the workshop on the urban and cultural heritage of the historical city of Shahara, which was held at the Cultural Center in Sana'a on December 4-5, 2023, which stressed the strengthening of efforts to preserve historical monuments in the city and preparation for the file of the city's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Minister Al-Yafei praised the outcomes of the workshop, stressing the ministry's keenness to enhance efforts to preserve historical cities throughout Yemen.

The President of the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, Obbad Al-Hayal, also met with the members of the committee, and listened to an explanation of the results and outputs of the workshop, and what can be done in the context of preparing the file for the city's inclusion in the World Heritage List.

The city has about 320 different facilities, some of which are four centuries old.

It is noteworthy that Yemen has three cities and historical sites registered on the World Heritage List: Shibam Hadramawt, Old Sana'a, Zabid, and the ruins of the Kingdom of Sheba in Marib, in addition to the island of Socotra on the list of natural world heritage.
